Sports Injuries
Sports injuries can affect any part of the body and can involve muscles, bones, ligaments, joints and/or nerves. Some of the most common sports injuries are stress fractures, tendinitis, bursitis, ligament sprains, muscle strains, facet joint pain, piriformis syndrome, sciaitica, plantar fasciitis, ITB syndrome, patellofemoral dysfunction, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Symptoms depend on the specific injury. Symptoms may include pain at the site of injury or referred pain. An example of referred pain would be if you injure your low back you may feel the pain in your buttocks and/or lower extremity. Other symptoms may include numbness and tingling, loss of mobility and weakness.
Treatment: Physical therapy techniques vary depending on the injury but will focus on decreasing pain, restoring motion and improving strength. Treatment may include modalities (electrical stimulation, ultrasound, heat and ice), manual therapy techniques including joint mobilization and myofascial release as well as specific stretching and strengthening exercises.
Prevention: Many sports injuries can be prevented if one has the proper strength, flexibility, stamina, coordination and conditioning prior to engaging in sporting events. A physical therapist can also help you get ready for an event to prevent injury.
